Contingent is now accepting pitches for Drawing Connections. This project will pair non-tenure-track historians with comic artists. Each pair will work in collaboration to create a comic based on the historian’s research.1 Each participant will be paid $500.
Historians should send:
- A paragraph or two that tells us briefly what the story is, what your argument is, and what sorts of sources you’d use.2
- A brief biography, including links to previous public writing if you have any (it’s fine if you don’t).
- An outline of your story in eight panels/bullet points. Don’t worry, you’re not actually storyboarding your piece, and you aren’t wedded to anything you tell us! We just want to see how you’re imagining it as a piece of sequential art.
Comic artists should send:
- A portfolio that’s representative of your current work (this can be attached images or a link to a website).
- A brief biography, including the media/styles you currently favor.
- A few sentences telling us why this project interests you.
- Links to work you’ve done on commission/in collaboration if you have any (it’s fine if you don’t).
Send your pitches and materials to pitches@contingentmag.org with the subject line “DRAWING CONNECTIONS.” Pitches are due by Friday October 22 at 7 PM EST.
- You’ll also be supported by your assigned Contingent editor who will be there through the whole process.
- See our standard pitch guide at the bottom of this page for more info on what we’re looking for.
