Call for illustrators
Contingent Magazine is looking for an artist to illustrate its upcoming December issue on history and Star Wars. The issue will feature pieces that place aspects of the franchise in historical context, consider how historical change operates in Star Wars storytelling, and analyze history from an in-galaxy perspective. The artist will be responsible for creating 2-3 header images and 4-5 spot illustrations, and will be paid for their work. We’re looking for someone with
- a distinct but flexible style
- a history of creating art in this fandom
- the ability to work to deadline in general and the availability to produce and submit the required pieces on a rolling schedule beginning December 1st
- experience illustrating from the written text of others, e.g. commissions, novel/fanfic scene illustrations
Applications are due Friday, October 18th. We will notify the selected illustrator by Monday, October 21st. At that point, we’ll share the slate of pieces to be illustrated, and work with the illustrator to negotiate fair compensation for the work to be done, decide on a schedule for completion, and sign a contract.

Call For Pitches
It is a period of great excitement for Star Wars fans. This winter brings the arrival of the new show The Mandalorian and the conclusion of the Skywalker saga with Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker.
To celebrate our love of the franchise and close out our first year of operation, we are dedicating the entire December issue of Contingent Magazine to Star Wars.
We are now accepting pitches for mini-essays (250-400 words) and shorts (750-1250 words) that explore the relationship between Star Wars and history.
Place an aspect of the franchise in historical context. Consider how ideas of the past, family, destiny, and historical change operate in Star Wars storytelling. Produce some in-galaxy historical analysis of these long-ago people, events, and ideas.
Limit your pitch to 50 words. Include a very brief note telling us who you are and provide links to previous writing if available. Compensation is $60 for a mini-essay and $250 for a short.
Contingent Magazine prioritizes pieces by historians working outside the tenure track, especially adjunct faculty.
