“Must be nice to get summers off!” This remark is a familiar one to those who teach undergraduates, and it’s made no less frustrating by its frequency. But the implications of this belief go beyond lots of scholars feeling frustrated at cookouts and summer camp pickup; it shapes battles over state budgets, union contracts, and academic freedom.
We are now accepting pitches for a mailbag roundtable on the question “What Do Professors Even Do All Summer?” As with all of our mailbags, we’re looking for pieces that use the specifics of the writer’s experience to explore a broader aspect of the question.
Contrary to our usual approach, we are looking for pitches from historians who act as faculty to undergraduates working in all institutions in all capacities, from grad students to adjunct faculty to tenured and tenure-track professors. Each piece should be 400-500 words; compensation is $100.
