Over its four-decade run, LIFE Magazine had 105 staff photographers. Six of them were women.
Joanna Scutts is a cultural critic and historian, and the author of <em>The Extra Woman: How Marjorie Hillis Led a Generation of Women to Live Alone and Like It</em> (Liveright/W.W. Norton, 2017). Her reviews and essays have appeared in the Washington Post, the New Yorker, the New Republic, Slate, Vulture, and the Guardian, among many other venues. As a researcher and curator at the New-York Historical Society, she helped plan and launch the new Center for Women’s History in 2017.
