Editor’s Note: September 30th marks the 127th anniversary of Vappala Pangunni (VP) Menon’s 1893 birth. To commemorate the occasion, Contingent Magazine asked his biographer (and great-granddaughter), Narayani Basu, how she assembled the first biography ever written on him. What follows, a special piece for our recurring donors, is incredible advice on researching and writing about independent India, modern South Asia, and ways to construct and complete a research project.

If you’re a donor of at least $3/month or $36 a year, log in to read this piece. If you’re not a donor, you can become one here.
